Unpopular Opinions Booktag | Booksmagick

The more I read and the longer I am in the book community the more I realise that I really don’t like a lot of popular series or books. When it comes to books I’m incredibly picky. Yes, even as a bookseller I am super picky about my reads. I discovered this tag with Jack’s Bedtime Reading and immediately knew I had to do this tag as well!

Know that these are my opinions, taste is different for everyone, so don’t get upset if you see your favourite book series on this list! 🙂

A popular book or series that you didn’t like

Right off the bat with a very unpopular opinion *laughs nervously*. I actually read the first book in German when it came out because one of the reviews said ‘The American Tolkien’ and I was hooked. Only, the dark and the grime and the sexual violence was something I hated about the book and I never touched the second book or watched the show.

Funnily enough I’m very up-to-date when it comes to the show what witch watching snippets my sister declares safe for me to watch and also I love Daenerys.

A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love

Actually, nothing comes to mind for this question.

A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you didn’t want them to end up with or an OTP you don’t like

Lifel1k3 by Jae Kristoff is a classic case of insta-love that had me rolling my eyes.

A popular book genre that you hardly reach for

Regular novels targeted at adults. Yes, I know not the best genre to avoid as a bookseller but I really really don’t like the atmosphere of novels. YA, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and children’s books are fine but novels have a different, more sombre atmosphere to them, the topics are often more serious even if it’s a funny book and the characters are older than me – real adults – and I can’t relate.

Romance. Except for LGBTQIA+ romance. I actually cover that part in my About Me page.

A popular or beloved character that you do not like

This is not the complete series, there are 11 books so far and number 12 is going to be released this year. The popular character that I do not like is Stephanie or rather Valkyrie. She is arrogant, a know-it-all, has no charm and gets on my nerves whenever she is on the page. Unfortunately she is the main character.

A popular author that you can’t seem to get into

Another faux pas when it comes to fantasy. Again, I have read the first book but didn’t like the writing style of Rick Riordan at all and despite my girlfriend’s best efforts to get me to read it I really don’t think I can.

A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing

So many YA books focus on romance or if romance is not the main focus the authors still squeeze a romance in there. Not every book needs romantic love? It could just be about friendship for once. Worse than romance everywhere is insta-love. Especially if they hate each other but are still drawn to one another. And love triangles. I never understood those and probably never will. Just … stop.

A common series that you have no interest in reading

Selection by Kiera Cass is something I will never understand. 35 girls competing for one prince.

The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie”, but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

I couldn’t get into the book because of the writing style. The slang as well as the way the story was told made it a bit hard for me to follow and I soon gave up. I still have it somewhere at my girlfriend’s home in case I do want to give it another try.

I really enjoyed the film, though.

These have been some of my unpopular book opinions. The questions haven’t managed to drag my deepest darkest secrets and book sins out but it got close. 😀

Anyone who wants to do this tag, feel free to do so! 🙂
